Pou plays 50th game

Mr Lewis Pou played his 50th div 1 game on Saturday April 28th which is a great achievement for any player.

Lewis has been a wonderful servant of the club for many years. Playing in the junior club, then Colts after High School and a bit of div 2 on his way to 50 senior caps.

The bearded one is a great guy to have around and at 27 years old he still has many good years ahead. With his brothers Jerome and Anton also playing at New Brighton this year the Pou family are contributing a great deal to the club. Lewis has played Canterbury Maori for a number of years and also made the South Island Maori team this year.

Lewis embraces his Maori culture and is fluent in the language. He is famous in the Maori rugby circles for leading the Canterbury Maori Hakas which he embraces and enjoys this important role. Lewis has said if New Brighton div 1 make the final this year, he will give up smoking. Good stuff Lewis and a big congratulations on your milestone.

Meet Johnny Irish

John Semple is New Brightons latest recruit from the Emerald Isle, meet the lad who is wearing the number 10 jumper.

I’d like to start off by thanking all the people involved at New Brighton RFC for welcoming me with open arms and making the move over from Ireland very easy. Particular thanks must go to Roddy Butt and the Creek family who have looked after me a tremendous amount.

I had always planned to come and play rugby overseas it was just a case of doing my studies and getting my pharmacy qualifications then making the jump. I have played with several kiwis in the past who I still keep in touch with and it was these friends that encouraged me to have a go in this part of the world.

I have traveled in NZ before; visiting these friends and seeing this beautiful country but it was the city and the people of Christchurch that really caught my eye and was a major factor in my decision to come to Brighton.

The style of rugby in NZ is always something that I have watched and admired and getting the chance to live my dream is something special. So far I have loved every minute and look forward to every training session and game.

I come from a town called Limavady, County Londonderry in the North West of Ireland. I played rugby for my school Limavady Grammar school then for my town, Limavady. I then moved on to Ballymena to play in the all Ireland league.

If you see me in the club please do not hesitate to come over and chat to me. I look forward to meeting you all!

John Semple

Kia Kaha New Brighton!
