Round One Wrap Up

The Division 1 Season so far has been outstanding, the first time in Club history to go unbeaten in an 11 game round.

11 and O. What a ride it has been for the flagship side New Brighton Seniors so far in 2010. It was a good pre season with the side looking like having some much needed depth this year. The balance also looked good with the usual experience in the side complimented by some young guys coming through namely three nineteen years olds in the back, Misi Salave, Luke Crotty and find of the season Fia Meafou. Another couple of huge off season gains have been halfback Chris Young and Chris Damsteegt who unfortunatly is out for the rest of the season with injury.

The draw looked a tough one with the first three games against Old Boys, Sydenham and Varsity. The guys hit the ground running with a huge win over Old Boys followed by two tough wins over Sydenham and Varsity. Isaac Ross was getting lots game time and was making a huge difference at lineout time which had been a problem in the past. His experience along with Marcel Cummings Toone, Tyson Keats and Jonathan Poff was proving valuable off the field as much as on, with the guys training at a high standard.

A win over Marist then a couple of close wins over Sumner and Burnside followed and the team was starting to show some real character with strong second half performances. The team was being captained well by Jamyn Keats and Mitch Alcock. Round seven came with the two unbeaten sides meeting at Rawhiti New Brighton v Christchurch. The game was played at finals intensity. New Brighton was playing most of the rugby but were not getting the points. Christchurch took their chances well and after a charge down Christchurch scored. More of the same when after a turnover Ch-Ch moved the ball wide to score again giving them a 17-3 half time lead. This looked daunting to say the least but the whole character thing kicked in with New Brighton climbing into their work. The gap's were starting to appear and 2 well taken tries by Mitch Alcock and Chris Demsteegt put the guys in a position to win the game. Ryan Crotty was playing well then after some good work from the forwards Misi Salave showed some magic to stand up the defence and scored close to the posts. The Rob Smith conversion gave New Brighton a 20-17 lead with about 5 minutes to play. The guys defended well to hold the lead and take the DCL shield.

Good wins over Lincoln and Shirley were next then another tough game v Linwood. The guys dominated the first half with the wind at their backs but with only a ten point lead the second half was always going to be hard work. Linwood came back well to lead 14-13 before two try hero Fia Meafou scored after a Ben Murphy off load and a great ball from Dave Cattamole. The round was completed with a home game v Belfast. With great support from the junior club the guys started very well with three tries. A bit of a flat patch in the second half but the game was always under control with a final score of 32-10. Two tries by player of the day Chris Young and also a double for the in form Ben Murphy. A good night down at the club and nice to have five trophies. Well done to coaches Steve Crotty and John Seque. Thanks also to the resource coaches (you know who you are) and managers Wayne plus Ron. The team has also had good support from Div 2 and Colts players. Now the top six, so no easy games there, but this side has the depth, confidence and camaraderie to continue on its way making 2010 a stellar year.

250 Senior Games for Nick McMullan

A wonderful achievement took place on Saturday April 10th when Nick McMullan better known as Knuckles ran out for his 250 div 1 appearance v Old Boys at Rugby Park.

Nick has been around the club for decades and has played some of his best rugby in recent seasons.

Knuckles has been instramental this year in setting up the 'front row club' which is not to be confused with a coaching clinic in any way! He has basically taken the younger props under his wing to pass down knowledge at the Bower travern 2-3 nights a week over a crate of Lion or two!

With most of the guys back from last year,New Brighton were bolstered by the return of some former players in Isaac Ross, Brett Mather and Jonathan Poff. Tyson Keats also made the trip south with the Hurricanes having the bye week.

This was balanced by the div 1 debut for 3 nineteen years olds in the backs as well as Chris Damsteegt who is proving to be a fine signing. The team ran out to perfect sunshine by first time captain Mitch Alcock. The guys started very well and scored after a nice scrum move where Keats gave a great inside ball to Poff. The Brighton forwards were getting on top with Evan Seymour, Alcock, Lewis Pou and Ross standing out. The loose trio of Poff, Aaron McCoy and Ryan Hooper were feeding off each other and were a constant threat to Old Boys. Just before half time Ross scored to make the score 28-0. Everybody expected Old Boys to come back in the second half with a slight wind behind them but New Brighton continued on their way with Brett Mather, Ben Murphy, Misi Salave and Fia Meafou finding space outwide.

It was a fantastic day for Nick and the guys to run out winners 48-0.The crowd witnessed some high class rugby and were impressed by the positivity showed by the men in Gold in everything they did.

DIV 4
These guys had a great 2009 winning the Plate final. These guys will be lead by 2009 club coach of the year Robin Bush.

DIV 5
With div 4 and div 5 being in the same grade,it was a tough year for these guys. In 2010 there will be no Classics grade just an outright div 5 so that will better for all concerned. A new coach Adam Watson will lead the side, so don,t hang up the boots yet guys.

Rugby Development Officer Roddy Butt and Club Captain Derek Davidson are very happy with the standard of coaches we have on board for 2010. Our club will be unmatched by any club in regards to the strength and depth of our coaching staff. With the new clubrooms looking good (which will provide us with the best facilities in the South Island) the future looks very very bright.
