  • Senior Division 2

The div 2 guys have had a solid start to the year.

They have a strong coaching set up and a good balance with Dennis Cations bringing lots of eperience to the team. Joining him is recently retired Wiramu Gray who has a lot of knowledge and is certainly a coach for the future.Wiramu is a former South Island Maori captain and Dennis a former div 1 coach. The team is well managed again by Simon Ward with help from Shane Cobb and Trent.
The heart of the side is retained from last year with the usual suspects Brent Cations, Dean Cations, Kieran Le Beau, Morgan Fox, Nick Fowler, Adam Teale, Andrew Littlejohn, Dan Stevens, Doug Stewart, Chevy De Bes, Andrew Kelly, James Brown (ah shit,I feel good), Nick 'Crusty' McCrostie and Andrew Heyworth all back from last years side.
Two quality guys have come up from last years div 3 and have added to the set up in James Alcock and Zach Trusler. Up from the successful Prem Colts team from last year are Sam Dix, Jason Sinclair, Billy Tupai and Denym Kara who is a div 1 squad member. With the div 1 having good numbers at this stage of the season a few guys have been coming down for game time. They include George Akerei and Cam Baines. A welcome aditon from South Canterbury has been prop Akili Namuaira.
All and all a well rounded side (not physically)with high hopes for a good year.
GO THE KILLER Bs YOU GOOD THING.

    Week 1
Tuff game against sum massive units. after an early yingy try things looked rosey but syd have a bit more fight than previous years and came back to score the next 2 trys. with a cple pens we went to the half with the lead 13 12 only for some poor tackling and mass ill discipline to cost us badly. again down and again a fight back with 5 to go and up by 3 we shld have won but after kick off a charge down and a try to syd locked the game up 27 25 to them all and all a good hit out with plenty to work on boys. pod james alcock

    Week 2

New brighton registered its first win in the division two curtain-raiser with a solid 23-5 win over belfast. after leading 8-0 at the break, brighton’s forwards laid the winning foundation and the team showed patience and produced an all-round effort. belfast scored a late consolation try to wing ben lawrence, but the team made too many mistakes and conceded too many penalties. New brighton hooker dean cations led from the front, receiving good support from brother brent at fullback. halfback jason sinclair was tidy in clearing the ball from behind a dominant scrum.pod bc

    Week 3

After a good weeks training the killer bz where quietly confident of bringing the silverware home but after a lack lustier warm up and some poor decisions in 1st half all looked lost. down 24-8 at the half the boys showed what potential they have scoring some outstanding trys and dominating up front with 5 to go the score was 24 20 only for christchurch to score an intercept try to put the game out of reach but the boys weren't dead and buried yet. straight from kick off a pen made it 29 23 with 2 to go and with some more great runs from misi and zac morgan went over the line for the winner only for the touchy to say forward pass which was very dubious. but hey thats ruga boys need to get a win to get campaign back on track next week and it doesn't get any easier against front runners lyttelton. pod dougie

    Week 4

Three tries in the space of eight minutes midway through the second half took Lyttelton to a comfortable 27-13 win over New Brighton in their division two curtain-raiser. New Brighton went to the break ahead, 8-5, but the try-scoring burst by the port players turned the game. The best of them was from the restart after Lyttelton’s second try when the ball was moved quickly and Chris Till found himself in the clear.
For Lyttelton, No. 8 Tumua Fusi gave good go-forward and halfback Chris Barry was industrious and passed accurately, Captain and lock Doug Stewart was a tireless worker, No.8 Samoan George kept driving hard despite the body being battered, and halfback Jason Sinclair gave good service.

    Week 5

A cold wet day at the office. In the sheds it felt like we where about to turn a corner and turn we did. After a early pen suburbs hit back with one of there own and a try right after. Running into the southerly and only down 3 8 at the break team morale was high at half time. Another pen made score 6 8 and then a good team try finished of by BC gave the boys the lead a lead they would defend till final whistle. Some outstanding performances from deano dougie faldo and the ever present brownie lad the platform for a gusty victory and the backs under new guidance the rotund 10 kieRAN played to the game plan and punched corners well final score 11-8. Club day next week local derby Vs Linwood

    Game 6

    Club Day
The division two curtain-raiser was won by New Brighton which had the game won by half-time, leading Linwood 28-3 after a dominant first 40 minutes. Linwood rallied strongly in the second half and scored two of the three tries, but the seasiders, if letting their standard slip a little, were comfortable 33-17 winners.
Brighton’s flankers, Nicky Fowler, on the openside, and James Brown both featured prominently throughout, the rugged Brown beavering in the tight and showing out in loose play, while right wing Zac Trussler had a notable second half, anticipating well on defence and throwing his light frame at sturdier opponents when in possession. Game topped of by a great night at the club thanks to pest and his new found career as either kitchen lady making fish sammies or a hippy hugging trees now for biggest game so far this year the high flying HSOB. POD Faldo

    Game 7

A day to remember @ the sand pit
The feeling was good in the sheds be4 the game and it felt like it was time to skin the kolar oh I mean polar bears. The game started well for the boys with dougie getting a early pen only for Old boys to dominate for 20 min scoring 2 trys in quick time but after a peep talk under the posts the true killer bz started playing footy. A well constructed try to Seagull Ju who this time dotted down under the posts and a great team try finished off by the wipit Sam Dix saw us lead at the break 15 12. Then roll on the 2nd half and if defence does win games this game was a perfect example with James the beaver brown, Faldo and the rest of the boys putting there bodies on the line for the cause. The bench had a great impact this week which is what is needed in this comp to win games, with 5 to go Dougie slotted another pen to finish the game 18 12 well done boys next week Marist and with a few players away a true test of our depth. Game 8

Marist was the next test for the boys and with a few guys away and a quiet week on the training paddock the boys where in for a test. Marist scored 1st and we could all tell we were flat as after 10 min and the old school big D thing where even again only to concede another soft try but in true spirit we hit right back going into the break 12 10 up. The second half brought better composer and with a couple of quick trys and the ever improving boot of dougie a lead was established only for the sin binning of Boner to give Marist a sniff but some great D and some good old fashioned pigs in last few min helped the boys hold on for a ugly but 5 point win 25 20. POD Arkillies next week sumner cant wait

    Game 9

80 min of domination that's the only way to describe the mauling at St leonards.
Game started well with Brighton attacking Sumner's line for periods of the 1st 30 min but Sumner where the 1st to attempt points with a 50 meter pen which feel well short and after that the Killer Bz started putting on the points with and I quote 'The TRY of the season' after crotty made a great break beating once All black D Gibson to off load to Faldo to run it in 40 meters. And straight away from the kick off back on attack for the 2nd try and a 12 nil lead at the break. Sumner then came out for all of 5 min with a head of steam only to be replied by some crunching hits. That's when the more skilled and the fitter side took over scoring 2 more try's and a pen. Adam Teale ran like a gazelle Wiz bumping guys of left and right and the ever present danger of our back 3 worried Sumner all day. Big props to pack as well especially Morgan who started at prop and had the measure of his much more senior opponent. POD Adam Teale 29 Nil

    Game 10

The sand came alive again on Saturday with the killer bz looking to go for 6 on the trot and a win would keep them in the hunt for 1st round honours. With injuries and some absence in the Div 1 squad the back line was rearranged but lost nothing as new Brighton full back will lighting dove over in the 1st 10 min to take a 5 nil lead. Uni as expected fought back to score next and tie the game up and soon after take the lead only for the Killer bz to score before the break. Down 10 12 and with a strong southerly now behind them and a tactical change up front the boys dug in only for the ref to deny ju of a try but beaver brown scored soon after. then turn on the D uni where hard on attack for a period of 10 min where all the boys put there bodies on the line and repel there attack in what was the winning of the game. Again Brighton where denied a certain try with Faldo cashing over only to be told it was held up. 15 12 win outstanding efforts for fullback lighting beaver brown was everywhere and gained a well deserved POD. Courty was a great night now for bus trip out to high flying Lincoln.

    Game 11
Lincoln University broke New Brighton’s six-match winning streak, coming from behind with the wind at its back to win the division two curtain-raiser, 18-14, after trailing 14-8 at the break. Brighton was not about to surrender its winning run without a fight, however, and Lincoln was made to work hard for the win in a tense and exciting battle.
The difference was in the way Lincoln’s first five-eighths Jacob Beleski used the wind to keep the visitor pinned in the right-hand corner and in the cohesive driving play of the forward pack. Lincoln scored two unconverted tries in the last quarter.
Standout players for Brighton were captain and lock Dougie Stewart, No. 8 Shaun Creek, and centre Zack Trussler. POD FREAK
Also a MASSIVE shout out to all the supporters who come down every week rain hail or snow keep it up as we push for the trophy KIA KAHA
    Game 12
Shirley drew with higher-placed New Brighton in the division two curtain-raiser, but may regret taking a scrum instead of a penalty shot at goal late in the game when nothing eventuated from the attacking scrum. The teams were locked at 12-12 at half-time and they finished level at 17-17 with a try apiece in the second spell.
New Brighton turned over the ball far too regularly, especially in the mauls and at the breakdown, and both backlines dropped the ball or threw shoddy passes when the try-line beckoned.
For New Brighton, lock Adam Teale was prominent along with industrious No. 8 Shaun Creek. Right wing Zac Trussler hunted for work and ran strongly. POD Dan Stevens

    Game 13 last of round

It took a while for the seasiders to get into gear, but once they got going Burnside had no answer to Brighton’s structure and organisation, the visiting team winning the division two curtain-raiser, 45-0, after leading, 19-0, at the break.
Burnside looked likely in the first quarter with wing Rhys Martin showing pace when in possession, but was unable to post points. New Brighton dominated the second quarter with tries to centre Sevy de Bous after Wiremu Gray stepped through a gap. No. 8 George Akerei used his strength near the line and speedy wing Zac Trussler outran his chasers to give Brighton its healthy half-time lead.
Burnside didn’t get a look in after the restart as Brighton controlled possession and territory. A second try to Akerei was followed by a quiet period before a late spurt of tries to loose forward Shaun Creek, centre Aki Selave, and wing Sam Dix.

    Trophy Section 1

The curtain raiser between the same Div 2 sides saw New Brighton score a comprehensive win 42-10 over University after leading 15-0 at the break. The seasiders with a dominant loose forward trio, played with more desire and purpose and the students were restricted to two late tries to enter on the score sheet.
New Brighton No 8 George Akerei had a fine game, touching down 3 times on his own account and received good support from hooker Dean Cations in ball carrying.
University had to play second fiddle to New Brighton, but off the back of the scrum Apensia Bulimaiwai was a commited runner and Willie Todd a sound first five.

    Trophy Round
New Brighton and HSOB drew their division two curtain-raiser, 10-10, with Brighton’s tigerish defence close to its line when playing into the wind in the second half a feature of this willing match. Old Boys had lost to Brighton in the round-robin and conceded two unconverted tries in the first half before scoring through No. 8 Jamie Livingstone, the conversion having the home team down 10-7 at the break.
Despite playing most of the second spell in Brighton’s half and camping on the line for long periods, Old Boys were denied as try by fierce tackling which eventually led to a mistake after a series of drives to the line. Fullback Will Topps kicked a late penalty goal to give Old Boys the draw, but he missed with two reasonable chances before it became third time lucky. A 50m attempt in the last second also went well astray.
Livingstone was a menacing runner for Old Boys in the first half and flanker Jeff Steele gave fine support. Wing Pierre French was an elusive runner. Brighton hooker Dean Cations was in the thick of the tight action, while No. 8 George Akerei made some crunching runs from the back of the scrum and Nicky Fowler was an industrious openside flanker. Championship Semi Final
The killer bz went down today in there trophy semi but not for lack of trying. Port scored in 1st 5 min from a turnover and a toe hack though Brighton then traded penalty's with them to be down 13 6 at the break. 5 min into second half port then scored another opportunist try but to the boys credit we never gave up down 23 6 with 8 to play the ever resent George scored and we were down 23 13 and try as we might we couldn't get another. All and all a top season going from finishing 8th last year to make top 4 was a great achievement and I can say with hand on heart IM BLOODY PROUD TO BE KILLER B and we all agreed to come back next year and have a shot at winning it.
We would like to thank Den who gave us the tools to play so well and wiz your experience was vital in our success this year to our management wardy and Cobb great job lads see ya next year and last but def not least our LOYAL supporters you guys get us though games your voice is always heard and we are forever grateful. we still have 1 game left 3rd v 4 playoff lets get up for this 1 and finish the season on a high.
