Senior Division 2
Week 2
New brighton registered its first win in the division two curtain-raiser with a solid 23-5 win over belfast. after leading 8-0 at the break, brighton’s forwards laid the winning foundation and the team showed patience and produced an all-round effort. belfast scored a late consolation try to wing ben lawrence, but the team made too many mistakes and conceded too many penalties. New brighton hooker dean cations led from the front, receiving good support from brother brent at fullback. halfback jason sinclair was tidy in clearing the ball from behind a dominant scrum.pod bc
Week 3
After a good weeks training the killer bz where quietly confident of bringing the silverware home but after a lack lustier warm up and some poor decisions in 1st half all looked lost. down 24-8 at the half the boys showed what potential they have scoring some outstanding trys and dominating up front with 5 to go the score was 24 20 only for christchurch to score an intercept try to put the game out of reach but the boys weren't dead and buried yet. straight from kick off a pen made it 29 23 with 2 to go and with some more great runs from misi and zac morgan went over the line for the winner only for the touchy to say forward pass which was very dubious. but hey thats ruga boys need to get a win to get campaign back on track next week and it doesn't get any easier against front runners lyttelton. pod dougie
Week 4
Three tries in the space of eight minutes midway through the second half took Lyttelton to a comfortable 27-13 win over New Brighton in their division two curtain-raiser. New Brighton went to the break ahead, 8-5, but the try-scoring burst by the port players turned the game. The best of them was from the restart after Lyttelton’s second try when the ball was moved quickly and Chris Till found himself in the clear.
For Lyttelton, No. 8 Tumua Fusi gave good go-forward and halfback Chris Barry was industrious and passed accurately, Captain and lock Doug Stewart was a tireless worker, No.8 Samoan George kept driving hard despite the body being battered, and halfback Jason Sinclair gave good service.
Week 5
A cold wet day at the office. In the sheds it felt like we where about to turn a corner and turn we did. After a early pen suburbs hit back with one of there own and a try right after. Running into the southerly and only down 3 8 at the break team morale was high at half time. Another pen made score 6 8 and then a good team try finished of by BC gave the boys the lead a lead they would defend till final whistle. Some outstanding performances from deano dougie faldo and the ever present brownie lad the platform for a gusty victory and the backs under new guidance the rotund 10 kieRAN played to the game plan and punched corners well final score 11-8. Club day next week local derby Vs Linwood
Game 6
Club Day
The division two curtain-raiser was won by New Brighton which had the game won by half-time, leading Linwood 28-3 after a dominant first 40 minutes. Linwood rallied strongly in the second half and scored two of the three tries, but the seasiders, if letting their standard slip a little, were comfortable 33-17 winners.
Brighton’s flankers, Nicky Fowler, on the openside, and James Brown both featured prominently throughout, the rugged Brown beavering in the tight and showing out in loose play, while right wing Zac Trussler had a notable second half, anticipating well on defence and throwing his light frame at sturdier opponents when in possession. Game topped of by a great night at the club thanks to pest and his new found career as either kitchen lady making fish sammies or a hippy hugging trees now for biggest game so far this year the high flying HSOB. POD Faldo
The feeling was good in the sheds be4 the game and it felt like it was time to skin the kolar oh I mean polar bears. The game started well for the boys with dougie getting a early pen only for Old boys to dominate for 20 min scoring 2 trys in quick time but after a peep talk under the posts the true killer bz started playing footy. A well constructed try to Seagull Ju who this time dotted down under the posts and a great team try finished off by the wipit Sam Dix saw us lead at the break 15 12. Then roll on the 2nd half and if defence does win games this game was a perfect example with James the beaver brown, Faldo and the rest of the boys putting there bodies on the line for the cause. The bench had a great impact this week which is what is needed in this comp to win games, with 5 to go Dougie slotted another pen to finish the game 18 12 well done boys next week Marist and with a few players away a true test of our depth. POD Ju
Game 8
Marist was the next test for the boys and with a few guys away and a quiet week on the training paddock the boys where in for a test. Marist scored 1st and we could all tell we were flat as after 10 min and the old school big D thing where even again only to concede another soft try but in true spirit we hit right back going into the break 12 10 up. The second half brought better composer and with a couple of quick trys and the ever improving boot of dougie a lead was established only for the sin binning of Boner to give Marist a sniff but some great D and some good old fashioned pigs in last few min helped the boys hold on for a ugly but 5 point win 25 20. POD Arkillies next week sumner cant wait
80 min of domination that's the only way to describe the mauling at St leonards.
Game started well with Brighton attacking Sumner's line for periods of the 1st 30 min but Sumner where the 1st to attempt points with a 50 meter pen which feel well short and after that the Killer Bz started putting on the points with and I quote 'The TRY of the season' after crotty made a great break beating once All black D Gibson to off load to Faldo to run it in 40 meters. And straight away from the kick off back on attack for the 2nd try and a 12 nil lead at the break. Sumner then came out for all of 5 min with a head of steam only to be replied by some crunching hits. That's when the more skilled and the fitter side took over scoring 2 more try's and a pen. Adam Teale ran like a gazelle Wiz bumping guys of left and right and the ever present danger of our back 3 worried Sumner all day. Big props to pack as well especially Morgan who started at prop and had the measure of his much more senior opponent. POD Adam Teale 29 Nil
The difference was in the way Lincoln’s first five-eighths Jacob Beleski used the wind to keep the visitor pinned in the right-hand corner and in the cohesive driving play of the forward pack. Lincoln scored two unconverted tries in the last quarter.
Standout players for Brighton were captain and lock Dougie Stewart, No. 8 Shaun Creek, and centre Zack Trussler. POD FREAK
Also a MASSIVE shout out to all the supporters who come down every week rain hail or snow keep it up as we push for the trophy KIA KAHA
New Brighton turned over the ball far too regularly, especially in the mauls and at the breakdown, and both backlines dropped the ball or threw shoddy passes when the try-line beckoned.
For New Brighton, lock Adam Teale was prominent along with industrious No. 8 Shaun Creek. Right wing Zac Trussler hunted for work and ran strongly. POD Dan Stevens
Burnside looked likely in the first quarter with wing Rhys Martin showing pace when in possession, but was unable to post points. New Brighton dominated the second quarter with tries to centre Sevy de Bous after Wiremu Gray stepped through a gap. No. 8 George Akerei used his strength near the line and speedy wing Zac Trussler outran his chasers to give Brighton its healthy half-time lead.
Burnside didn’t get a look in after the restart as Brighton controlled possession and territory. A second try to Akerei was followed by a quiet period before a late spurt of tries to loose forward Shaun Creek, centre Aki Selave, and wing Sam Dix.
TOP 8 Pool Christchurch New Brighton HSOB and Uni
New Brighton No 8 George Akerei had a fine game, touching down 3 times on his own account and received good support from hooker Dean Cations in ball carrying.
University had to play second fiddle to New Brighton, but off the back of the scrum Apensia Bulimaiwai was a commited runner and Willie Todd a sound first five.
Despite playing most of the second spell in Brighton’s half and camping on the line for long periods, Old Boys were denied as try by fierce tackling which eventually led to a mistake after a series of drives to the line. Fullback Will Topps kicked a late penalty goal to give Old Boys the draw, but he missed with two reasonable chances before it became third time lucky. A 50m attempt in the last second also went well astray.
Livingstone was a menacing runner for Old Boys in the first half and flanker Jeff Steele gave fine support. Wing Pierre French was an elusive runner. Brighton hooker Dean Cations was in the thick of the tight action, while No. 8 George Akerei made some crunching runs from the back of the scrum and Nicky Fowler was an industrious openside flanker.
